"Marina's Cuckolding Report" (MCR) is the first entry (not counting the side-stories) in the Marina trilogy - a Japanese visual novel series, which itself is a part of a much larger collective of stories centered on netorase (or "cuckolding", as it is translated in the official English release). Sadly, only the first game in the trilogy (and another title from the larger series) has been officially translated in English, however fan-translators came to the rescue. The other parts of the trilogy recently received unofficial translations, which prompted me to pick up the first title to check it out.

MCR is a pretty short, and thus pretty simplistic game, but it does many things right, when it comes to the presentation of netorase. There are also things I wanted to be done differently, but let's talk from the beginning.
We enter the shoes of one Azuma Kenji, a husband of Marina, and a father to Saki. He loves both of the girls in his family very much, but recently something has been bothering him. Kenji has read an internet blog, written by someone engaged in wife-sharing, and Kenji has found a fetish he never knew he had. Now he is constantly imagining what would happen if Marina had sex with another man. He is even creating imaginary situations while having sex with Marina.

In a refreshing turn of events, Kenji doesn't hold his secret in for long, and confides in his wife. While Marina is originally pretty weirded out, she is not totally against experimenting, and soon a third person enters the couple's life. Hiroto is a student, and also Marina's co-worker at a supermarket. He has recently broke up with his girlfriend and is pretty depressed, thus both Kenji and Marina decide he might be a pretty decent candidate for experimentation. Marina just has one condition - Kenji cannot watch her having sex with Hiroto, but she will provide him a report of her "extracurricular" activities. Hence the title of the game.
MCR breaks the mold of many netorare and netorase games, which tend to have dual viewpoints from both the male and the female characters, in order to showcase the totality of events, without hiding anything. "Marina's Cuckolding Report" only has the male protagonist view in the main game, and we don't ever see any of the sex scenes between Marina and Hiroto, until the very end of the game. Marina would go out to have fun with Hiroto, leaving Kenji in an aroused and jealous state, and would return later to tell him all that has happened, while having sex with Kenji.

In fact, I really liked the sexual content between Kenji and Marina, as instead of useless moans and screams, she would talk dirty to him throughout the whole scene, while giving him the report of her sexual activities with Hiroto. She would even end up embellishing the events, in order to increase Kenji's arousal even more. Kenji himself is getting more and more jealous regarding Marina's strengthening bond with Hiroto, but he never doubts that she truly loves him, and would stop the cuckolding, if he requested.
As you can see, the story is pretty simplistic, and the main game can be finished in under 3 hours. The game ends in the only way it could reasonably end, that is an open ending. Kenji and Marina happily continue the cuckold relationship and who knows what the future will bring. Queue the two sequels. There is also one bad end that results from the very predictable circumstances - Kenji trying to go behind Marina's back and do things she didn't explicitly agree with. Trust is very important in a proper open relationship, and breaking the trust ends up in Marina putting her foot down and quitting the lifestyle.

MCR is a completely wholesome and vanilla game. Hiroto only wants to have sex with a beautiful mature woman and sexually satisfy her. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body, which is pretty rare for fictional "bulls", and doesn't have any designs to actually steal Marina. At the same time, Marina's and Kenji's bond never wavers, and they happily indulge in their fetish.
After I finished the game and went to the gallery, I was surprised to see there were still many empty CG slots. Apparently, the game does contain the scenes from the Marina's point of view... in the scene recollection gallery, where they are unlocked after finishing the game. This is something that is not clear at first glance, but scene recollection pages 3-4 are all composed of hitherto unseen scenes.
The main game worked surprisingly well as a single POV title, and I didn't even miss Marina's side of the story. Which is for the better, as her storyline is frankly not the best. These new scenes are supposed to fill in the gaps in our knowledge, but they are just prolonged H-scenes, with barely any worthwhile character interaction. Moreover, the content is so painfully vanilla, that it's detrimental to the genre. There are only vaginal scenes with a few different positions, and that's it. No anal, not even really any dirty talking, and the dialogue are primarily composed of "ahh" and "ohh", which is a serious downgrade from the main game's dirty talk. It's all... really boring. The main game never felt like it was overstaying its welcome, but the new scenes do exactly that.

Anyway, the game is not particularly impressive in the graphical department: all the sprites have only a single pose and a few expressions, and while the CGs are adequate enough, the backgrounds are super simplistic, and might actually be stock images.
Both Marina and her daughter Saki are voiced by the same voice actress, which actually surprised me, as the voices sounded pretty different to my ear. None of the two males are voiced, but in this case I didn't really miss that.
Anyway, "Marina's Cuckolding Report" is a decent first entry in the series, though I wish the content wouldn't be so damn vanilla, and Marina's scenes could do with more dirty talk, and less annoying moaning. I hope the sequels get better in that regard.
